Rocky Mountain Altitude Video

Video: Fourtitude: Four Riders, One Altitude

| Videos

Rocky Mountain’s riders are a diverse bunch–a fact the company takes pride in. With the Fourtitude video above, Rocky is setting out to show that its new Altitude bike line is equally diverse: to wit, four very different riders push the limits on one bike–Rocky Mountain’s Altitude 790 MSL.

What sets the Altitude and, for that matter the company’s 29er Instinct model, apart from other bikes on the market is the Ride-9 system shock mount system, which allows you to radically tweak the bike’s geometry and suspension characteristics. We’ve written about this several times before. Here, in fact, is just one review.

Rotating the two interlocking chips in the shock mount raises/lowers the bottom bracket half an inch and changes both the head and seat angles by as much as 1.7 degrees. At its steepest setting, the bike possesses a 68.3-degree headtube and 75.3-degree seat tube. In its slackest setting, those angles change to 66.7 and 73.6 degrees, respectively. Rotating those chips also tweaks the leverage ratio on the Altitude’s rear shock. In its slackest settings, the suspension has a more progressive stroke, which should help prevent bottoming out for riders pushing the bike hard over technical terrain.

Wade runs it slackest; Thomas runs it in slacker and progressive (forward and down, aka “Vanderham Mode”); both Dre & Gully run the bike neutral and progressive (furthest down).

Rocky Mountain Altitude 730 Bike 2013 > R > Rocky Mountain

Rocky Mountain Bicycles humbly began in the basement of a Vancouver British Columbia bike shop, in 1981. The employees first imported bikes to sell to their customers. Later, they began manufacturing and importing frames to their exact specifications. Rocky Mountain now produces mountain bikes, road bikes, and urban bicycles. The company has come quite a ways from their modest beginning; however, their core values have never wavered. Rocky Mountain Bicycles is just as sought after now as they were in 1981.

Though the Altitude has been around for quite some time, it has been completely revamped. To start, the Altitude features the 650b/ 27.5 wheel platform, which has taken the industry by storm. The 27.5 platform is the best of both worlds. The Altitude series accelerates and is as nimble as a 26” wheel bike, yet features the extra stability and traction found on a 29” bike. Rocky Mountain poured tons of technology into the Altitude series including ABC pivots, StraightUP™ geometry, SmoothLINK™ Suspension, and Ride-9. Once you throw a leg over the Altitude you’ll never look back.

The Altitude 730 is constructed of FORM™ 7005 series custom hydroformed alloy and features ABC™ pivots. ABC™ Pivots are Rocky Mountain’s patent pending Angular Bushing Concept™ pivots. ABC™ pivots are lighter, more durable, and are laterally stiffer than cartridge bearings. The Altitude 730 also features a tapered head tube for stiffness, press fit bottom bracket, and ISCG 05 tabs. The Rocky Mountain Altitude 730 features StraightUp™ geometry, which allows for efficient climbing. As the suspension sags, you are now in a powerful pedaling position of approximately 73°. This allows you to sit in the middle of your saddle with your weight over your pedals for efficient climbing. SmoothLink™ Suspension features minimal pedal feedback so you get a smoother pedal stroke. By placing the rear pivot above the rear hub axle, the average chain torque line stays parallel to the lower link, which eliminates pedal-bob. Lastly, the Rocky Mountain Altitude features the new RIDE- 9 system, which allows you to adjust the head angle from 66.6° to 68.3°, and the seat tube angle from 73.6° to 75.3° by rotating the chip at the upper shock mount.

Rocky Mountain strived to make a bike with the latest and greatest technology, utilizing the 650b/ 27.5 platform that didn’t break the bank. You’ll find high quality components at an affordable price point with the Altitude 730. Rocky Mountain chose to dress the Altitude 730 in RockShox suspension components. The RockShox Revelation RL Solo Air works harmoniously with the RockShox Monarch RT custom valved rear shock. The Revelation features 150mm of glorious suspension with Motion Control Lockout and rebound adjustment. The 15mm Maxle Lite and tapered steer tube ensures the front end is rigid. The RockShox Monarch allows you to adjust the rebound, trail threshold lockout, and suspension rate. SRAM X.5 trigger shifters work with the SRAM X.7 front and rear derailleurs to produce 20 gears which will serve you well, no matter the terrain. Avid Elixir 3 brakes hydraulic brakes will bring your bike to stop, when you’ve had enough fun for the day. From wheel to wheel, the bike is doused in high quality components, from the SRAM 10 speed drivetrain, to the Race Face cockpit pieces, ending with the Wheeltech inferno wheels by SUNringle.

FREE PROFESSIONAL ASSEMBLY

Each Rocky Mountain complete bike includes free professional assembly by Jenson USA. Prior to shipping your bike, we will completely build and tune it, just as we would for an in-store purchase. Then, we'll partially disassemble and carefully pack your bike for shipping. Please allow 3 business days for the bike build process prior to shipment.

When your bike arrives, it will take about 30 minutes to unpack and perform basic re-assembly tasks (such as installing the front wheel and seatpost) using common hand tools. Jenson USA has created a helpful video (below) to guide you through this process. Stuck? Please call us at (888) 880-3811 and we’ll be happy to help.
