Not a bad place, just not the best.
The service isn't world class (not sure what you were expecting?) but nobody there has been rude to me or done anything that really bothered me.
I've purchased several small accessories there, and the experience has been OK each time. They try to cater to the entry level to the average consumer to the cult cyclist. In not wanting to specialize and leave anybody out, they do an OK job at service all... but not really a GREAT job at serving any of them.
Note: I have no idea what the other reviewers are talking about but I've been in here several times in the evening during the week and on weekends and there is NOBODY that is notably attractive here. So if that's your deciding factor go at your own risk. -

Low-performance Bicycle.
Mechanic off for 2 days. Next appointment for service is in 2-3 weeks. When asked what was going on, there was just a "Sorry sir". Goodbye Performance Bicycle. I'm considering a picket campaign. -

Service is awful. They totally ignore you and not care unless you're buying a big ticket item like a packaged bike. I've been here twice and both times they just ignored me and didn't care. I wanted to buy a helmet and some accessories. I took my business to InCycle where they were VERY attentive and overall a WAAAY nicer store.

The Home Depot of bicycle stores in Pasadena. Be prepared to be completely ignored if you're not buying a washer or dryer set (aka high priced pre-packaged bike with cheapo components) and come in looking for lowly blinky lights or a bike helmet. I have probably visited this store about 6 or 7 times (when I can't find what I want at InCycle or Open Road) and the service can be extremely hit or miss, though usually miss. This is somewhat salvaged by a wide selection and good sale prices, online and in the store
Color me surprised by all the 5-star reviews of this place, albeit from Yelpers with only a few reviews (hmmmph), but much like the big box stores of any other retail store, selection and price are negated by vanilla spotty service. -

Pros:
-Loc Le is a golem created for the sole purpose of great customer service
-Surprising selection of products
-Service makes you feel at home
Cons:
-Doesn't make me coffee
-Doesn't call me back the day after
Etc:
-Apparently, being attractive is a requirement for employment here
My friends and I only recently began taking up biking seriously and when we did, we met Loc at Performance Bicycles. Instantly, it felt like we had our own personal shopper, suggesting just the right bags, lights and frames.
Then when it came to the time for talking price, Loc did everything in his power to make sure we got the best deal. I entered a poor man in search of a bike, I exited... well, still REALLY poor but happy. -

Had a flat biking into that Make Music Festival thingy from Silverlake, which completely tore up my legs, so we decided to stop into the only bike shop in Pasadena that was open to fill 'er up. After a few minutes with bike extraordinaire Loc, we ended up with brand new tubes, a new seat -- my ass was not in agreement with the current arrangement -- and some tire tape (or something, I am no bike expert like Loc) that should have already been on the bike, but that's what happens when you buy one off of Craigslist.
The point is, if you're in the area and looking for bicycle superiority, head into Performance and ask for Loc. -

Performance is awesome!!! They have a lifetime guarantee on all their products and they honor their commitment. I purchased a Spin Doctor bike stand from them in 2008, and it broke. They let me return my used bike stand and exchange it for the newer model. Thanks Cesar! (he's the manager there)

Stopped by yesterday to get an inner tube replaced. I have practically no knowledge around bike maintenance whatsoever.
Went in there with $8 in my pocket and a bike with a busted tire. Came out with a new inner tube, installed free of charge. Helpful, knowledgeable staff.
A great experience for my first time in a bike shop, and an even better ride home!
Thanks PB! -

Got an email from Performance Bike last week about a Bike Maintenance Clinic they were having so I decided to stop in. The clinic started at noon and there was no fee for it. The associate giving the clinic, Andrew, was super cool and very easy to talk to. We asked questions and he showed us how to perform basic bike maintenance. At the end of the clinic I decided to pick up some chain lube and bar ends to make riding a bit more fun and easy.
Thanks Andrew for the awesome clinic and will be by next time with a few friends in tow.
