Ernie and Sharon Luke of Mesquite have opened a new shop to specialize in service for street motorcycles. Photo by Vernon Robison/Moapa Valley Progress.

There is now a local shop to serve bikers in the community. Mesquite Motorsports has been open at 140 Riverside Road Ste. C in Mesquite for about a month and a half now. The new shop specializes in everything streetbike.

Shop owners Ernie and Sharon Luke are, themselves, street motorcycle enthusiasts and their shop shows it.

“I’ve always just loved Harleys,” said Sharon smiling.

She points to a photograph on the wall of the reception area. It shows her, and her daughter, seated on a beautiful Harley Davidson motorcycle.

Ernie and Sharon moved to the Mesquite area several years ago. Before that they had been running a cattle ranch in New Mexico. They had planned on coming in off the range and settling in Mesquite. Ernie had planned on getting a job in town to pay the couple’s expenses. But the couple moved in at just about the time when the economy fell apart and they suddenly faced a scarcity of jobs. But that hasn’t stopped them.

“I’ve always felt like the best job you can have is the one that you make for yourself,” Ernie said.

He explained that he began looking for a business to start up in the area. He noticed that he had neighbors with street bikes, dirt bikes and even 4-wheelers who had very few options on where to go for servicing the vehicles.

“We saw a need in the community,” Ernie said. “After all there are three street bike clubs in town here. And people are having to travel to service their bikes.”

Mesquite Motorsports has two technicians on staff at the shop. Both Tony Cantrell and Rob Howells are graduates of the Motorcycle Mechanic Institute and are certified Harley Davidson technicians. Cantrell even took specialty courses in vintage model Harleys.

Customizing road bikes and restoring vintage model bikes is a particular talent of the Mesquite Motorsports team, Ernie said.

In addition, the shop has a dirt bike/ATV specialist in Colby Bute. All of the staff is well versed in off-road vehicles, chinese scooters, outboard engines, snowmobiles and jet skis.

The shop offers regular oil changes, lubrications and general maintenance specials. Tire mounting and balancing services are also offered for road bikes as well as off-road vehicles.

Mesquite Motorsports can also be a source of parts for those who prefer to do their maintenance and repairs at home. Parts sales are guaranteed within three business days in most cases and orders can be drop shipped directly to the customer’s address.

“We have established relations with two Harley Davidson dealers to guarantee that we can have access to genuine Harley Davidson parts,” Ernie said.

The shop also has a website where customers will soon be able to enter orders that are linked directly to Western Power Sports and Tucker Rocky for parts orders. This online order entry capability is expected to become active by the middle of this month, Ernie said.

“This will be a convenience for residents of Moapa, Overton, Logandale and even Beaver Dam, Arizona,” said Luke. “Our customers won’t have to travel to Mesquite to get those orders in.”

Telephone orders will continue to be taken for S&S Performance Parts, Custom Chrome, Harley Davidson and V-Twin, he said.

The shop is eager to be of service to the Virgin Valley and Moapa Valley communities.

“We even offer an emergency roadside service,” said Ernie Luke. “If you break down out there somewhere, give us a call and we can come and get you; and help get things running again.”

Mesquite Motorsports is located at 140 Riverside Road, Suite C in Mesquite; right next to Sherwin Williams Paint. Their hours are Monday – Friday 9am – 5pm and Saturday 9am – 4pm. The shop can be reached by calling 702-613-4545.

Eddy's Bike Shop Advantage

Thinking of buying a new bicycle? One of your first choices, and not necessarily an easy one, will be where to shop. It can be a challenge because there are a myriad of stores that carry two-wheelers, from specialty retailers, to giant department stores, to backyard garage operations.

Where you buy, however, has everything to do with what you get. You see, bicycles aren't like toasters or suitcases. Bikes are shipped in boxes and they must be assembled and tuned. There are many types, too, and you should never buy until you've figured out which is right for you. Measurements and adjustments are required to ensure the frame is the correct size and that the seat and handlebars are properly positioned. And, every new bicycle will need a minor tune-up after several weeks of use.

What's more, modern road and mountain bikes can travel at high speeds and carry you over demanding terrain where the machine's materials and construction get tested. A quality two-wheeler, carefully assembled and fit to you, will be the safest, most durable and fun bicycle to ride.

For these reasons, we strongly recommend shopping at a good specialty bicycle store in our area. For instance, we hire competent salespeople and expert mechanics who'll ensure that you get the right bike and a quality machine. Look for a store that is clean, has helpful personnel, offers a good selection, and an on-site repair department.

Here are the nine top reasons our store is the best place to shop:

1.Eddy's has the right bike for you.

We offer a wide selection of bicycles for different people and uses. And we provide expert assistance in selecting the proper bike type and model. For example, a road bike makes little sense if your plan is to tackle dirt trails. Likewise, if you're into cruising, you certainly don't need to test ride racing rigs. You need the bike type that's right for you, and our experienced staff will listen to you and help you choose.

2. Comfort and safety are built into every bike we sell.

Bicycles come in different sizes. And they're very adjustable. We find the right frame size for you and then dial in the fit by positioning the seat and handlebars, brake levers and shifters as required. This ensures comfort and that you're in complete control of your bike for safety. There are many variables, too: If you need a softer saddle, we'll put one on. If you prefer to sit more upright, we can accommodate you. Our goal is to make your new bike as comfortable to ride and as easy to pedal as possible. We have years of experience in fitting bikes to riders and we'll get yours fitting so good it disappears beneath you.

3. All our new bikes are assembled by professional bicycle mechanics.

You might be surprised to learn that bicycles are not completely assembled at the factory. It's true. They're actually delivered to us disassembled and in a box, and we spend about an hour (depending on the model) assembling, tuning and testing every bike (at no additional charge to you). This is required by the United States Consumer Product Safety Commission and we pride ourselves in meeting the highest standards. What's more, our technicians and service department are always prepared to make adjustments and provide advice should you need assistance during a purchase or after a sale.

4. We allow test rides, the best way to select a new machine.

How do you know if that new rig is the right ride for you? The best test, and the truest way to judge a bike, is by taking a spin on it. Roll down the street and shift through the gears. Feel how the frame fits your legs and arms. Try the brakes. Stand up and climb. Coast a bit. Does the bike feel comfortable, easy to pedal, smooth? Is it quiet? Do you like the ride? Make some mental notes and return to our shop to try some others. We're happy to let you compare bikes and get a feel so you find the perfect machine.

5. Our experienced staff is happy to offer all the free cycling advice you need.

We're staffed by knowledgeable and enthusiastic cyclists who love to share their expertise. Need to learn how to shift, fix a flat, carry gear, pump your tires? Want to find the best places to ride or friends to pedal with? Just ask, and we'll be more than happy to help.

6. Every new bike comes with a free 30 day inspection.

Bicycles are machines that require maintenance. One of the most important services is after you've ridden your new bike for 30 days. During this break in period, cables might stretch, spokes may loosen and other adjustments could change. For your new rig to ride like the day you bought it, Eddy's will provide a free 30 day inspection, where we readjust the entire bike back to factory specs. (a $30 to $60 value, depending upon the work required).

7. All our bikes are guaranteed.

We stand behind every bike we sell. If something goes wrong, bring it in and we'll be happy to deal with it. In the rare event of a breakdown, there's also a manufacturer's warranty protecting your purchase.

8. Our bikes offer the highest quality, longest life and best resale value.

We don't just stock any bicycles. Because we stand behind our products, we find and carry only the finest brands and models. Which means that you get a great bike that will last and last with nothing more than regular care and maintenance. And, should you decide to upgrade, you'll be able to sell the bike for a good price.

9. We carry all the best accessories to go with your new bike.

Cycling's most fun when you have the right gear to go along with that new bike. Our store is loaded with top-quality accessories and equipment such as helmets, locks, pumps, hydration systems, computers, and plenty of other goodies designed to help you enjoy riding. And, we're happy to advise which choices are right for you.

Great place to rent a bike!  Looked like a good place to buy and service a bike, too, but I only rented there.

It's conveniently located in the middle of a (supposed) 30 mile bike trail along a canal, and the path is level and well groomed.  If you go north from the shop, you get to Canal Fulton, a small town with some places to eat, after about 8 miles or so.

Service at the shop was great.  We were helped by a really personable person despite the shop being very busy on a holiday weekend.  We rented a hybrid and a comfort bike, and both were in great condition.  Rates were really affordable-- only $5 an hour!  I'm not sure we'll ever make it back to Akron, but if we do, we're coming back here!

Took a beginners class on bike repair/safety. Very informative and worth every penny.  The Staff is helpful and friendly. Great selection of new and used bikes, but no high pressure sales. Since they are right on the Towpath,  its a great place to start a bike ride!

I usually do business with the Ernie's shop located in New Philadelphia, OH, but recently I was in Massillon, OH and in need of a bike rack on a Sunday.  I was surprised and glad they were open.  I had never been to this Ernie's location, so I decided to stop in.  I'm glad I did, because they had a HUGE selection and a very friendly and knowledgable staff.  They were not pushy, either.  I received help when I was ready and they did not pester me beforehand.  All the questions I had were answered and when I bought the bike rack, one of their staff showed me how it worked on my vehicle.  They are located right on the Ohio-Erie Canal Towpath Trail and have great, close parking.  Do yourself a favor and pay 'em a visit!

Can't say enough about this place been something special to me since my Grandfather bought me my first real bike here from Ernie and ever since have held on to the memories of this family owned business.  Will have to make a return trip here to get a new bike and even have it shipped back to Denver as I have yet to find a place that matches Ernie's service and friendliness.
