Local riders warn of trail debris
A man in Victoria has wire burn across his neck, after being clotheslined as he was mountain biking along a trail in Saanich.
RCMP say it's not likely the placement of the wire was malicious, but Derek Kidd, 26, isn't so sure.
"I have ridden that trail before and I've never seen anything like that," he told the Times Colonist.
Locals say debris on trails is a risk that faces mountain bikers on the North Island and Sunshine Coast.
"Around here we have a lot of logging, [so] if there's any signage to suggest an area is closed for active logging or active blasting, it's important to respect those signs," said Colin Wilson, of Comox Valley MTB. "The machines could be far off in the distance, but debris and stuff can be thrown a long way."
He says branches and trees can often come down on their own, blocking a trail that was previously clear, but he hasn't heard of any deliberate vandalism of trails in the local area.
"The other thing is, we have four-legged creatures here and people have had sightings of cougars and bears. One mountain biker this morning just saw a young fawn," said Wilson. "Personally, I've actually run into a few cougars out there and more than a branch or anything, they'll fight back, so you want to be careful."
