Residents can expect to see plenty of cyclists peddling around Penticton next week.

Bike to Work Week 2013 will take place from May 27 to June 2, and feature a number of activities designed to get people out of their cars and on to bikes.

"It introduces people to the fun and freedom of riding a bike and makes them aware it is easy to commute by bike," said Kurt Flaman, co-owner of Freedom the bike shop, which is participating in the week

Among the activities taking place during the fifth annual week are a workplace challenge.

Organizations are invited to challenge others and see who gets a higher percentage of participation.

In recent years, the city has challenged the Regional District Okanagan-Similkameen, with the city ending up the loser.

A video of the price the city had to pay, with Mayor Dan Ashton riding a tricycle one year and a penny farthing bike the next, was shown at this week's council meeting.

There was also discussion, that an elected official and administrator from the losing organization this year, will have to ride a bike built for two wearing chicken and deer costumes.

During the week, The Penticton and Area Cycling Association will hold a bike skills and safety workshop and there will be different celebration stations to go to for coffee, snacks and the chance to win daily prizes.

The kick off breakfast starts at 7 a.m. and ends at 9 a.m., May 27 at Gyro Park.
