New Haven targets illegal operation of dirt bikes

Posted: Updated:

NEW HAVEN, Conn. (AP) - New Haven police say they've made 15 arrests for illegal operation of dirt bikes and all-terrain vehicles.

Police said Friday the arrests stem from a 10-week sting operation called Operation Bike Life. More arrests and bike seizures are expected.

Police say the illegal activity has caused injuries as operators ride on roadways, through parks and playgrounds and on sidewalks.

Police say bystanders also have been injured when operators try to elude capture.

The legislature has passed a bill that would increase the maximum penalties that cities and towns can impose for illegal use of ATVs, dirt bikes and snowmobiles on public property. Gov. Dannel P. Malloy is reviewing the bill.
