Beverages and snacks will be given out to commuter bicyclists on two mornings next week as part of Yuba City's recognition of National Bike Month.

Energizer stations will be set up from 7 a.m.-8:30 a.m. Monday on the levee bike path near the Fifth Street Bridge and at Civic Center and Poole boulevards near City Hall from 7 a.m.-8:30 a.m. Thursday.

The Yuba City stations are part of a regional effort coordinated by the Sacramento Area Council of Governments to promote riding bicycles to work. Cyclists stopping at the stations will also receive a National Bicycle Month T-shirt.

"The ultimate goal is to provide a greater awareness for bike facilities in Yuba City and encourage people to bike to work to reduce fuel emissions," said Diana Langley, Yuba City deputy public works director. "Riding to work improves the overall community."

Langley said this is Yuba City's third year of recognizing the month.

Along with stopping at the stations, cyclists are invited to visit www.mayisbikemonth.com and register the number of miles they cycle during the month.

Langley said that last year cyclists either working or living in Yuba City totaled 28,354 miles — an increase from 7,781 miles in 2011. She attributed the increase to more awareness about the website.

"This year, I am hoping we can beat that," Langley said.

The top three Yuba City individuals who log the most miles and most commute miles will win cycling jerseys, she said. Cyclists who commute five or more times this month can receive a water bottle by submitting information at www.bikeyubacity.com.

Earlier this month, the Yuba-Sutter Transportation Management Association hosted a May is Bike Month breakfast at Tharp and Butte House roads. The Corner Bike Shop and New Earth Market were also sponsors of the event.
