Do you remember King's Bicycle shop? It was across McDill from where Dud's is now. I think Dud may have bought out the original Kings.(not sure)

Roguts. He was the "Bike Hippie". Always wore the glasses with the little rear view mirror on them. I remember wafts of smoke coming from the back room when kids hung out there.

I often got my bike supplies from there in the 80's when I worked down the street from it. I miss that place. CHRIST, I MISS THE 80'S!

I rented an apartment from Mrs. Thames in Old Hyde Park. I believe Dud had passed away. Great bike shop - great old neighborhood.

Yes, and Esther Thames passed away as well, about 5 years ago.
What a great woman.

Got my first 10-speed from Dud Thames. I didn't like the traditional type of handlebars that came on 10-speeds, the ones where you have to reach way down to ride. I wanted to ride upright so Dud switched them out for a set of handlebars that looked like rams horns!

Bought my first 10 speed there too... Ram horn handlebars? Yep!
Colombia Blue and white tape on those handlebars.. Took a little getting used
to riding it... But you felt real 'Tour de France' on that thing.. Or at least I did..
(sidebar: my first 3 speed came from Western Auto on Dale Mabry.. First Stingray from WA at Britton Plaza.. Can still remember the smell of all that rubber and how it would hit you in the face as you open the door to the air conditioned store)...

First bike I was truely nuts about was my orange "Chopper" Little wheel in front, big wheel in back, with a banana seat. You could change gears with a "slapstick" located on the bar between your legs.
