mountain bike chain guard

Chain Guard/Pants Guard for mountain bike

  • Hi everyone,
I am new and I'm sure a lot of you are going to tell me not to get one, but I need to find out where I can get the plastic (or metal) ring that attaches to the front sprocket so pants don't get stuck or tatooed by the chain. I've been searching the net and most of what I have found is not the right thing. A lot of them are something that replaces one of the sprockets. I just want a bolt on ring for the 5 hole pattern sprockets. I have arthritis in my hands and, to be honest, I don't like dealing with the straps that you put on your leg to keep the clothes out. This also doesn't keep the grease off the pants.

Like I said, I've looked online and couldn't find what I am looking for. I also tried my local shop with no luck. Please, if anyone knows where I can find a couple of these rings (one for my wife too), please let me know!

Thanks for pointing me in the right direction!
    Eric

What brand/model crankset are you using? Shimano sell them for theirs. There are also cheap aftermarket ones (in Aus) for chinese copies.

My bike is in the shop getting a tuneup but I thought it was Shimano. I am not a biker. I hardly ever ride because my knees are bad, but I like riding so I just deal with the pain if I really want to go riding. I have been searching the net for something that would work. Do you happen to know of a website that has them? I'm not exactly sure what they are called. I know it is NOT a bashguard. I have looked for chain guard, sprocket guard, chain ring, and all kinds of things with no real luck. I don't want to replace a sprocket with a bash guard because I need all the gears to get my fat butt up hills. I mainly ride streets so having high gears is nice when cruzing on flat ground or on declines.

I would ride more often if I had this piece because I wouldn't be stuck only riding with shorts. I don't like wearing the strap. I have arthritis in almost every joint and my leg swells up some and then I have to stop and readjust the strap multiple times, which is too annoying and hard on my hands!

Thank you for your help! Any links would greatly be appreciated!

Actually, I think the part you are/were looking for is a "chainring guard". Hope that helps. I was looking for the same part when the chainring caught my pants.

well I don't have info on the chain guard. However, I cut a legging from a pair of sweat pants that have the gathered bottom and I use the tie strap for the top. It protects the pant leg.

Hi there, I wanted to put my two cents in even though the question was asked quite some time ago.
I understand that you seem to be looking for the ring the goes next to the biggest gear. I can't really help you on that since my bikes haven't had any problems with their rings.
Of course I still had a problem with getting my pants stained and even getting caught up. I didn't like the ideas of clips or velcro either because that means you have to deal with that every time. I don't ride my bike for fun all that much. Mainly it's to save time so I don't want to have to mess around with folding my pants leg or whatever.

So I came up with a quick fix idea that certainly helps a good bit and is very easy and costs very little. All I did was run some dental floss from the front derailleur to the back of the frame.
For me to do this, I looped a long piece of floss through a hole in the frame (back by the gears and rear derailleur) and pulled half the length through. Then just pick an end of floss and loop it around the top of the front derailleur. Now just tie the ends together in a square knot. There should be two lines running parallel to each other and approximately parallel to the chain. To get the tension right, just keep tightening, and the dental floss should slip easily enough. Then tie a few square knots to keep that fixed. Next conveyor belt your knot close to the derailleur. You can wrap the two free ends of floss around the middle of the derailleur and pull the first knot down by tying a new knot. This makes a triangle kind of.
I think these two lines do a good job of pants deflection. I'm sure I could rig up more stuff if I was dissatisfied. Also, I don't think having constant tension on the derailleur matters at all because the derailleur is rigid in that direction.

Hope this helps someone. Please tell me if it does.- Arthur Hebert

Alternatively, you could use one of those velcro reflectors on your pants leg. This will keep your pants away from the chainrings and give you a measure of safety as well.

I made one for my Hardrock from a piece of stainless steel sheet metal.
  • I have a Magna Great Divide 18 speed bike.  I need a chain guard but it doesn't look like just any chain guard will work.  I wear a skirt so I need to figure out something so I can ride my bike without getting grease on my skirt.
