car hits bike race

Know as you watch this video that only minor injuries were suffered, so you're free to enjoy these crashes as slapstick, and a true mess of course design.

This comes from Sunday's Crystal Cup bike race outside of Washington, D.C., part of the Air Force Association Cycling Classic. The initial crash, at the 33-second mark, looks worse than it is. The camera doesn't capture the collision, but it's not the car hitting the race marshal. It's a straggler behind the peloton that clips her and knocks her down—the car was thankfully able to stop before hitting the downed cyclist.

But wait: that's the lead car. Take a look at the course map—this is the north section. The peloton is coming back around. They have no idea what's waiting for them. As officials desperately try to get the riders to stay right (even as one yells, "Left! Left!"), one swings wide and attempts to bunny hop the prone marshal. It goes poorly.

That rider, Tim Rugg, wrote about the crash on his blog.

For years I've been saying that there would be a serious crash in this out and back section of the Crystal Cup course in the Air Force Classic and of course I fall victim. What the video doesn't show is a cyclist from the main field clipping the official as the official seen laying on the road tries to clear out of the way to allow the breakaway that has about thirty seconds on the field led by the Volt pace car is about to come through. The incident is unknown to anyone in the main field and we come out of the final corner of the course upwards of 30mph causing a whip that creates a chain reaction of the riders behind having to accelerate out of the corner to maintain position. I always took the outside line due to the shield from the draft and of course having no idea the field would have to jump three car lanes right to avoid the chaos the crash caused right in the middle of the course.

Rugg writes he only suffered road rash and a deep gash. According to police, the marshal was treated for minor injuries. Two other participants were hospitalized on Sunday.

Truesdill still riding dirt bikes after all these years

FAIRFIELD — He may have slowed a bit, but there’s no stopping Fairfield’s Gary Truesdill – at least for now.

Truesdill is still racing motorcycles at the tender age of 53, and still recalls the first time he straddled a dirt bike.

“I was 10 years old,” Truesdill said. “Basically, a neighborhood friend had an old minibike and introduced (it) to me, and I fell in love with it.”

Then, three years later at the age of 13, Truesdill took to the track competitively, starting in his first race.

“It was called Claude Osteen’s Cycle Park in Pomona,” Truesdill said. “I was scared to death. It was totally different. It still is today. It keeps me swimming. The fear, you get wrapped up in it. But once you conquer it, it’s OK. It’s just rewarding, very rewarding.”

Sometimes with the rewards comes setbacks, which nearly every motorcycle racer has experienced – injuries.

Truesdill has had his share.

“Five knee operations, numerous broken bones,” Truesdill said. “That race last year at Hangtown (in Sacramento) I hit a false neutral and broke every rib on my left side and had a collapsed lung . . . and my pancreas swelled up.”

After racing professionally for several years – including a Supercross race at the Oakland Coliseum in 1979 – it was time for Truesdill to take a financial break.

“I rode for Suzuki in motocross pro,” he said. “Then I quit riding for more than 20 years . . . I got a real job, you’re basically at the end of your rope: work, train and ride. There’s not enough hours in the day.

“I got back into it in 1999 and started again. Now it’s not as serious (for me). We still have to train and stay on the bike, it’s still a process. I have the same exact feeling today, though I’m 100 times slower than when I rode at the professional level. It still feels like you’re flying.”

After growing up in Southern California, Truesdill has raced at multiple tracks throughout California, but there’s always the ones that become favorites.

“I would say my favorite track to race now is (at) Oatfield (Raceway) in Turlock,” Truesdill said. “My favorite back in the day was Carlsbad. I have favorite tracks there and here. I like the rutty tracks. I would just say those are more old-school motocross, rough and rutty. That suits me better that a cleaner, flat track.”

Now that he mainly races for fun, Truesdill has passed his talents on to his son, Mitchell, who at 22 years old has the stamina to keep up with the younger racers.

“He’s a lot faster than me these days,” Truesdill said with a laugh. “I gave him the torch four years ago. I couldn’t catch him anymore.”

That hasn’t kept Truesdill off his bike, because it’s something he simply enjoys.

“I like the camaraderie, all my buddies I race with,” Truesdill said. “Some go play golf on the weekends. We all go race motocross.

“It’s probably just the fun factor. Before it was a full-on profession, a job. The fun part is what brought me back to it.”

Truesdill is still having as much fun as when he was 10.

Just like i said i need a 250 4-stroke. i would like the title but if no title in hand then we can do a notorized bill of sale, but i will need the vin# prior to seeing the bike just to make sure its not stolen or has a current lean on it. Once that checks out then i will come look at the bike and if its in good shape see what price is suitable for the condition of the bike. If you have a bike either reply saying you have one then send me a PM, or Just send me a PM! Like i said i would like it to be around the laffyette, breaux bridige, parks or any areas surrounding that, just not to far. Thanks.

trail bike that i converted to a dual sport and passed inspection. HOWEVER my father said if i tag it im getting kicked out... so i lose access to the shop/garage, woods to ride, pool...etc. and im not about to keep riding it as a dirt bike just after putting $700 in it to get it street legalized. so selling and buying c30 upgrades, model A rat rod stuffs or getting the 450 fuel injected version... located in maryland. looking for 2600 and i'll inspect. less that 30 hours on the thing, i bought from an old guy who was the first owner that rode it for about 5 hours and then hurt his back (lol). so she's in like new condition, the F (dirt bike) version that's street legal. come down and test ride...
